Minivan vs. SUV: Which One Should You Buy?
Are you planning to buy a big family car? In that case, you have two great choices - a minivan or SUV. However, you may wonder which one is right for you. Here we have provided a simple comparison between the two that will help you make the right purchase decision.
Positives of the Minivan
The minivan is one of the most practical and easy vehicles to drive. The minivan is low to the ground and even the smallest kid in your family will find it easy to get in an out without an adult’s help. Sliding doors make the minivan unique and there is no risk of your fingers getting smashed by slamming traditional doors. If you opt for power sliding doors, your kids can get in and out with just the touch of a button. The lower ground clearance also makes loading and unloading luggage easier.
A minivan has plenty of family space and it can accommodate six to seven passengers easily. Even the passengers in the third-row have enough space to stretch out. The minivan is a fuel-efficient car as well and you can get an average of up to 17 mpg in the city and up to 25 mpg on the highway.
Negatives of the Minivan
There is no denying the fact that the minivan is a great family car, however, they score poor in terms of look. Many people feel less cool when driving one and they are a bit more expensive than general cars. There are also not many models to choose from. If you are looking to buy a four-wheel drive vehicle, you won’t have many minivan options. One of the complaints of minivan owners is that it is difficult to reach their kids seated in the second- and third-row and they feel their kids are seated miles apart.
Positives of the SUV
SUVs have larger engines with more horsepower which helps transport more passengers with ease. The SUV has enough space to seat seven to eight passengers comfortably and can also tow which can be helpful for road trip or camping trips. The higher ground clearance of the SUV enables it to take on rugged terrain and hilly areas which you can’t even think of in a minivan. Due to their heavier and rugged frame, you can also travel in rough weather. Most SUVs are four-wheel drive and perform well as an off-road vehicle. You have a wide variety of options when it comes to choosing SUVs like midsize or full-size SUVs. They also make a bold style statement and many people feel cooler while driving in an SUV.
Negatives of the SUV
SUVs are bulkier which increases fuel consumption and you get lower fuel economy. The higher ground clearance leads to a higher center of gravity and affects the handling of the car. One of the drawbacks of high ground clearance is difficulty getting in and out of the car, especially for children. It also makes loading and unloading tougher in comparison to minivans. SUVs with three rows of seating have very little space for cargo. Getting in the third-row seat is a bit difficult in SUVs and you have to reposition the seat in the middle row which can be inconvenient.
