Top Car Categories Suited for Families
Family-Friendly cars can fall into three basic categories: SUVs, CUVs and Minivans. Here are some pointers to help you select the best car for your family.
Space: When looking for a family-oriented vehicle, you may have a number of features that spring to mind. By far, the first feature you’d think of is probably the space. This is a good place to start.
Begin with the number of family members you have or the number of people you’d like to accommodate on a regular basis. When looking for a family car, four doors are a must, as opposed to two door Sedans or Convertibles.
Smaller families may opt for smaller SUVs or CUVs such as the Honda CR-V or the HR-V. A family of three or four may even find a sedan comfortable such as the Accord or the Civic. However, if you have a large family of more than four members, you’ll need to look at larger vehicles such as the seven-seater Pilot or the eight-seater Odyssey.
Fuel Efficiency: Usually smaller, flashier cars do not major on fuel efficiency. Larger ones however, by design are more fuel efficient than cars from smaller cars or those from the luxury segment. The Honda Pilot and Odyssey have estimated MPG of 26 and 28 respectively while the CR-V and HR-V give estimated MPG of 32 and 34 respectively.
The Honda Pilot and the Odyssey are both large cars; however, the Pilot is a SUV while the Odyssey falls into the category of minivans.
Safety: Your most precious cargo is your family. So, it’s obvious that a family car should be designed with a safety as a major influencing factor. Although all Honda cars come equipped with a wide range of safety features, the Pilot is a top-rated vehicle for safety. It comes with safety features such as airbags, rear child-locks, ABS and traction control, Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Sensors, Parking Sensors, front and rear anti-roll bars, and electric-power assist speed sensing steering. The NHTSA gives this vehicle a full rating.
Interiors: Although appearances are not the most important for a family car, practicality is. Seat covers and floor mats made from easy-to-clean and dry fabrics are highly sought after in a family car. Those times when you hear the “oops… I spilled…” can be the most stressful, particularly when you’re in a hurry but can’t go on without cleaning up the mess. Easy-clean and quick-dry fabrics save time and effort, making your life that much easier.
Handy cup-holders, seat pockets, bottle holders, hand-held device charging ports and ample cargo space can be life-savers during a morning rush. Additionally adjustable air-conditioning vents for each row saves you from having to referee siblings who disagree on the temperature inside the car. These interior features and more are present in the Pilot and also the Odyssey.
On the whole, the ideal family SUV, widely acclaimed as such is the Honda Pilot.
